Buccaneers Looking To Re-sign Chris Godwin

Chris Godwin is approaching NFL free agency, but another deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seems increasingly likely. The veteran wide receiver, who previously played under the franchise tag before securing a three-year contract, is once again expected to remain in Tampa Bay.

According to league insiders, executives anticipate Godwin re-signing with the Bucs, and ESPN’s Jenna Laine reports that the team will “do what it takes” to keep him. Despite being limited to just seven games in 2024 due to an ankle injury, Godwin remains a crucial piece of Tampa Bay’s offense, particularly as they transition under new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard.

Turning 29 soon, Godwin has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards four times in his career, thriving alongside Mike Evans as a reliable slot weapon. Before his injury last season, he was averaging over 82 yards per game—his second-best mark ever. Given his consistent production, keeping him in Tampa Bay would be a smart move as the team adjusts to another coaching change in 2025.

“I love Chris,” Grizzard said (via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times). “He’s as good of a human being and football player as you’re going to be around. He was a huge asset to us last year, being a coach on the field and playing all those different roles.”

With Grizzard now leading the offense after Liam Coen’s departure, continuity will be key. Tampa Bay did draft Jalen McMillan in the third round last year, and he played 70% of snaps as a rookie, but the Evans-Godwin tandem remains a proven formula for success.

The 2025 wide receiver free-agent class is headlined by Tee Higgins, followed by several veterans with injury concerns or declining production. Godwin’s ACL injury and recent ankle issues could impact his market value, making a high-dollar contract like his previous three-year, $60 million deal less likely. However, with Evans already secured for 2025, a short-term extension keeping Godwin in Tampa Bay appears to be the most probable outcome.
