Netflix Eyes NFL Sunday Package as It Expands Live Sports Offerings
Netflix is making bold moves in the live sports streaming space, and now, the NFL is firmly in its sights. The streaming giant has already secured a Christmas Day NFL package, but it reportedly wants even more football action—specifically, a Sunday afternoon package currently held by CBS and FOX.
Netflix Plans to Bid on NFL Sunday Games
According to Netflix’s chief content officer, the company is preparing to bid on a Sunday NFL package, adding to its growing portfolio of live sports. Traditionally, the NFL’s Sunday games have been split between CBS (AFC) and FOX (NFC)—a system in place since the 1990s. However, with the rise of streaming-exclusive deals, Netflix sees an opportunity to secure a major stake in America’s most popular sport.
Could Netflix Outbid Traditional Networks?
With a market capitalization exceeding $450 billion, Netflix has the financial firepower to outbid competitors if the NFL opens negotiations. The league’s current media rights deal runs through 2033, but it has an early termination clause that could allow for a new agreement as early as 2029. If Netflix’s interest is strong enough, the NFL might exercise that clause to explore new, more lucrative partnerships.
Netflix’s Growing Investment in Live Sports
Netflix has steadily expanded into the live sports market, adding:
✔ NFL Christmas Day games
✔ WWE programming
✔ Boxing matches
✔ Future Women’s World Cup coverage
With these additions, it’s clear Netflix is serious about competing with traditional broadcasters and other streaming services like Amazon Prime, which currently holds the Thursday Night Football package.
As Netflix continues its push into live sports, securing an NFL Sunday package could be its biggest move yet. If successful, it would mark a major shift in how fans watch professional football, further solidifying streaming’s role in sports broadcasting’s future.
