Jamie Carragher Questions Liverpool’s Contract Standoff with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk

Jamie Carragher has raised concerns over Liverpool’s inability to finalize new contracts for key players Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, despite reports that the Egyptian forward has already been offered a new deal.

Liverpool’s Contract Dilemma: Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold

Since the start of the season, discussions surrounding the futures of Salah, Van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have dominated headlines. All three stars are currently eligible to negotiate free transfers with foreign clubs, raising alarms among Liverpool supporters.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Fan Debate alongside Paul Scholes, Carragher expressed his concerns. Scholes initiated the discussion, stating:

“Once you get over 30, every club starts to evaluate your long-term potential. Back in our time, 35 was the end of the road, but now players are maintaining top form well into their late 30s. Data analysis is helpful, but a manager must also trust his eyes.”

Referencing new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, Scholes added:

“Slot and his staff see them train every day. At 32 or 33, they still look like they can perform at the highest level for at least another two years.”

Carragher’s Take: Liverpool Must Act Fast

Carragher agreed, reinforcing the idea that Liverpool should be offering longer contracts rather than just one-year extensions.

“They are still at the top of their game. It’s not just about what they’ve done for the club; it’s about what they can still achieve. A one-year deal isn’t enough – it should be at least two.”

He also questioned why the players have yet to commit:

“I’d be gutted if Liverpool didn’t renew their contracts. But I also wonder, why haven’t they signed yet? The team is built around them, they are loved, and no European club will offer them both the same money and long-term security.”

Will Salah Leave Liverpool? Carragher Weighs In

When asked about Salah’s future, Carragher dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia:

“I just don’t see Salah going there. He’s too driven, too much of a winner. He can play at the top level until 37 or 38.”

Finally, when pressed on whether Liverpool had actually tabled an offer for Salah, Carragher confidently revealed:

“Do not believe he hasn’t been offered a contract. I can assure you he has.”

What’s Next for Liverpool’s Superstars?

With Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold’s futures hanging in the balance, Liverpool must act swiftly to secure their key assets. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether these club legends continue their journey at Anfield or seek pastures new.
