Ross Byrne’s Move to Gloucester Confirmed -Leinster Star Joins Premiership Side
Leinster fly-half Ross Byrne will officially join Gloucester this summer, as confirmed by the English Premiership club. The 29-year-old will make the switch after 177 appearances for his home province and 22 caps for Ireland.
Byrne’s Career at Leinster & Ireland
Despite featuring 15 times for Leinster this season, with four starts at No. 10, Byrne has found himself lower in the pecking order due to the rise of Sam Prendergast. His limited involvement with Ireland and appearances for Leinster ‘A’ during the November internationals hinted at a possible move.
Having spent much of his career as Johnny Sexton’s understudy, Byrne has been a reliable playmaker, helping Leinster secure:
✅ 4 league titles
✅ 1 Champions Cup
✅ 1,156 points for the province
On the international stage, Byrne has contributed to:
🏆 2 Triple Crowns
🏆 1 Six Nations Championship
🏆 1 Six Nations Grand Slam
🏆 Ireland’s 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign
Gloucester Excited for Byrne’s Arrival
Gloucester’s director of rugby, George Skivington, praised Byrne’s pedigree:
“Leinster is rightly known for developing top talent, and Ross is one of the best they’ve produced in the last decade. Players of his caliber rarely become available, so securing him is a real coup for us. His signing is a statement of ambition, and we’re excited to see what he brings.”
Byrne, eager for a new challenge, said:
“I’m delighted to sign with Gloucester. Their exciting ambitions made this an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. The team plays a great brand of rugby, and I look forward to adding to that and growing alongside them. Having experienced the Kingsholm atmosphere before, I can’t wait to get out there in cherry and white.”
Leinster’s Future at Fly-Half
With Byrne’s departure, Leinster still has depth at No. 10, including:
- Sam Prendergast (emerging talent)
- Ciaran Frawley (versatile playmaker)
- Harry Byrne (Ross’s brother, expected to return from a successful loan at Bristol Bears)
More Departures from Leinster
Byrne is not the only Leinster player moving on this summer. Lee Barron and Michael Milne, both front-row players, are set to join Munster ahead of the 2025/26 season.
